What does it do?
|

|
CatsCradle is a web page editor written especially for translators, and it lets you translate web pages from one language into another. All the text on the web page that needs translating is exported into an editor where you can perform your translation. When you are done, the translated text is automatically inserted back into the web page. The sensitive html code is not touched!

How does it work?
|
|
|
The editor screen is divided into two sections. The bottom section gives you an overview of all the text segments in the file to be translated and it consists of four columns; No, Type, Source text, Target text. A word count for both source text and target text is provided. The top section consists of two blocks; one displaying source text and one displaying target text.
By clicking on one text segment on the overview part of the screen this segment will be displayed on the top section. You then type in your translation in the target box.

In addition to the web page editor screen you also have a script editor screen, which displays the scripts and hidden items in the html file. Sometimes you will also need to translate these items.

You also have the possibility to preview the translated web page anytime during your working process to check the layout. And you can also display the original page to compare to your translated version. In addition you can also print the content of the editor so you can proof- read your translation on paper and not just on the screen.

The program has integrated glossaries and translation memories capabilities. The file format .csv is used for both glossaries and translation memories. This format lets you easily share your files with other programs. So you can import and use your existing files, or you great new once.

|
It also supports several character sets. You can therefore translate between languages using different alphabets without having to cut and past special characters all the time.
|
|
|
A handy Catalogue feature is available for working with large web sites. Activating this feature will display all files in the folder you choose, included subfolders. Color-coding lets you know which files have been translated and which are still to do. And it will also provide you with a word count for each file, plus a total word count.

What it isn't!
|
|
|
You can't use the program for translating every kind of language. It only supports the following alphabets: Arabic, Baltic, Central European, Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Turkish, Vietnamese and Western.

|
Each time you start the program you are prompted to perform a registration. The registration is free and only to give the author an overview of the usage. Once you have registered this reminder window disappears.

|
Is it easy to use?
|
|
|
The user interface is very intuitive and I did not have any problems using the program.
|
|
|
The help section is very clear and explains accurately how to incorporate and use glossaries and translation memories.
|
|
|
The Catalogue feature also required a quick look in the help section. It was not clear to me what this function was all about until I read the notes about it.
|
|
|
All in all it is a very good program. It makes translating web pages a piece of cake!
