What does it do?
SolidConverter is a handy little program that converts PDF files into Word documents. And believe it or not - it actually works! You don't even need a copy of Adobe Acrobat or Reader to use the converter. It can be used as a standalone program or as a plugin for Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat.

How does it work?
During installation you will be asked if you wish to install add-ons for starting the program through Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat. If you accept this you can start the program directly through Word and Acrobat (not Reader). If you on the other hand don't want this, you just have to deactivate these options during installation and the add-ons will not be installed. (The add-on for Word is a template with macros.)

After launching SolidConverter the converter tool window will appear. Basically all you have to do to convert your document is choose the document to be processed and hit the convert button. You will be prompted to specify the target location and target file name. With this procedure you use the standard option settings. You can of course set the options yourself - allowing for a highly customized convertion.
To set the options you press the Option button in the converter tool window - and the Option dialog will appear.
You can set basic options like what user interface language you want or the output path of the converted files. Then you can set many options directly affecting the convertion process; you can for instance convert only the text without layout, you can convert only a range of pages or the whole document, you can convert text and layout but ignore images, etc.
There are also many other options available, I cannot list all of them here. Worth mentioning is perhaps the fact that you can extract and convert only images from a pdf file and save it in your desired image format. And for higher speed you can convert several pdf files at once instead of one at a time; also allowing for individual settings for each file during convertion of multiple files.

What it isn't!
You can download the program for free for a 15-day trial period to test it. The test version only converts 10% of your document - or 10 pages. Purchasing a licensed version of the program costs $49.95.

Is it easy to use?
I found all the options to be a bit confusing in the beginning. Basically because there are so many of them and because the names of the different options sometimes are not indicating the performed actions. So a quick look in the documentation is a must.
However, once I got the overview of the possible actions I really started appreciating all the options. There is an option for every need!
